Paul Miller

Festivals, awards nights, corporate dos and Burford's own quarterly comedy club — where I'm proudly billed as the Cotswold's "Neurotic in Residence." If there's a microphone and a room full of people, I'm your man.

About Paul

Officially billed as Burford's Neurotic in Residence. Unofficially, just someone who reads a room for a living.

I started out doing this for fun on the side, then kept getting asked back — as a comic, as the person holding a wedding together when the best man's speech ran long, and as the host who keeps a corporate agenda from feeling like a corporate agenda. These days I split my time between running my own quarterly comedy club and turning up wherever a room needs warming up.

The Long Version

Salford to the stage - sort of.

I grew up on the mean streets of Salford — and yes, before you ask, the accent is still in there somewhere, despite years of determined effort to suppress it. It tends to resurface at the worst possible moments, usually mid-punchline.

After too many years as an entrepreneur, I somehow ended up having my first stand-up gig at the end of a meditation retreat. No, it wasn't a silent one — that would rather defeat the purpose of a comedy set, wouldn't it.

Philosophical. Absurd. Occasionally both at once — usually to my own surprise as much as anyone's.

These days my material wanders wherever my brain wanders, which turns out to include: yoga (and the very specific humiliation of trying to look serene while your hamstrings scream), my ego's ongoing disappointment in having to live with me, reincarnation (yes — we're doing that one again), and the true story of how my dog moved to India after a near-death experience.

Make of that what you will. I mostly do.

What I Do

Three ways to book me, all involving a microphone

Pick the format, or tell me what you're planning and I'll tell you what fits.

Stand-up

Straight-up stand-up

A tight, crowd-tested set built for the room — clean where it needs to be, sharper where it doesn't. From 10 to 45 minutes.

MC

MC-ing that keeps things moving

Timing, transitions, and the odd bit of crowd work — I run the show so the room never feels the gaps.

Hosting

Hosting for corporate & private events

Awards nights, conferences, the office do — I set the tone early and make sure it lands, without turning it into a comedy gig nobody asked for.

The Club Night

Burford Comedy Club

Four nights a year at the Little Madhatter Emporium — a lineup of acts I actually rate, and me holding it together as Burford's Neurotic in Residence.
